Saint Francis in ecstasy 18th century Quito

Ecstasy of Saint Francis of Assisi by an unidentified Quito Artist
18th century, oil on canvas
Location: Monasterio de la Concepción, Quito, Ecuador.

In this painting, Saint Francis of Assisi receives Christ’s wounds (stigmata) from a vision of the crucified Christ borne by a seraph, an angel with six fiery wings. The miracle is believed to have taken place in 1224, two years before Francis’s death, while he was praying at Mount La Verna in Tuscany. This realistic portrayal of Francis’s concentrated on his eye expression and in the folds of his brown habit. The angel on the upper left looks at him benignly and plays some music for Saint Francis, who is lost in ecstasy at the shock of having received the wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
