St Francis blessing St Luis St Elizabeth
This is a vintage holy card–style illustration depicting Saint Francis of Assisi in the center, with arms extended in a gesture of blessing, flanked by Saint Louis of France (Lodovico) on the left and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (Elisabetta) on the right.
Saint Francis of Assisi is shown in his familiar brown Franciscan habit, barefoot, with a halo around his head. His arms are spread wide, a sign of both blessing and embrace, and the marks of the stigmata are visible on his hands and side.
On the left, Saint Louis of France, king and member of the Third Order of Saint Francis, is kneeling in prayer. He is dressed in royal robes with a golden cloak, and his head is encircled by a halo. At his feet is a basket with symbols of generosity and almsgiving (fruits or pomegranates).
On the right, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, queen and also a member of the Franciscan Third Order, is kneeling in humility. She wears a crown over her veil, a sign of her royal status, yet her hands are folded in devotion. A halo radiates around her head, emphasizing her sanctity.
The background features a serene garden-like setting with an arched loggia, flowering vines, distant green hills, and a village or church spire in the far landscape, evoking peace and harmony.
At the bottom, the Italian inscription reads:
“San Francesco d’Assisi e i santi protettori del Terz’Ordine Lodovico e Elisabetta”
(“Saint Francis of Assisi and the holy protectors of the Third Order, Louis and Elizabeth”).
The image reflects the Franciscan tradition of sanctity beyond the monastery walls, showing how Saint Francis inspired royalty and laypeople alike to live lives of humility, prayer, and service.
