Before the Crucifix of St Damian
St. Francis' encounter with this iconic crucifix took place inside San Damianos' ruined church, in 1205. St. Francis heard a voice from the cross with the following command to "Rebuild my Church".
His literal interpretation led him to physically repair the church and later to spiritually renew the entire Church through the founding of the Franciscan Order, a mission that the San Damiano crucifix came to symbolize. Over time, Francis came to understand that the "church" Christ was referring to was the entire spiritual body of the Church.
"O Most High and glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart. Give me right faith, certain hope, perfect love and deep humility. O Lord, give me sense and discernment in order to carry out your true and holy will. Amen".
