Español

Painting Saint Francis of Assisi Preaching to the Fish' by Edouard Jerôme Paupion (1898) on display in the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology (Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie de Besançon) in Besançon, France.

Edouard Paupion, was a French symbolist painter, born at Dijon, pupil of J.L. Gerome. His genre pictures and portraits are highly esteemed and his historical and romantic subjects always well composed and excuted.

This painting depicts the beloved figure of Saint Francis of Assisi, as he sits on the edge of a small boat ir order to get closer to the fish, and preach to them. The saint lovingly points the direction to heaven, signaling that he is talking about God. It is not sure if one of his brothers (sat down at Francis' back) got interested by the sermon, or impressed by the sudden gather of the fish. This other friar tries to get closer to witness the miracle.

On the other side, the fish gather in an orderly fashion, aligned according to the size of the fish, letting the small ones get closer to Saint Francis' feet, which touch the water.
