St Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio by Robert Kakegamic
This painting of St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio in the context of the Indigenous People of Canada was painted by Robert Kakegamic an Indigenous artist of Canada (date unknown).
The painting was commissioned by +Friar Philip Kelly, of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, a Canadian Conventual. It depicts, of course, reconciliation between the Indigenous people of the town and the wolf, with St. Francis as the mediator.
This painting is relevant at this time in Canada because of the Catholic Church’s interest in its continuing efforts to strengthen our relationship with the Indigenous People of Canada.
Currently, the Archdiocese of Vancouver, and the Diocese of Kamloops, (both in the civil Province of British Columbia) have entered into a sacred covenant with the First Nations people of Kamloops "Tk’emlups te Secwepemc" to move forward together.
Pax et Bonum.
Friar Edward Debono, Order of Friars Minor Conventual.
