Saint Clare roundel
A roundel (or herald) is a circular artwork, often used as a devotional medallion or as a small inset within a larger altarpiece or window ensemble. This particular example is made of stained glass set in a steel frame, depicting Saint Clare of Assisi holding the Monstrance, the symbol of her profound Eucharistic devotion.
The artist employs a technique typical of early 16th-century workshops, using delicate linework and a luminous golden stain to model the folds of the habit and the gentle features of the saint. Despite the limited palette, the effect is rich and striking, allowing the figure to stand out with quiet radiance. In the upper left corner, the initials S E can be seen, likely referring to the patron or donor who commissioned the piece rather than the artist. Devotional roundels such as this one were often used for private prayer, intended to accompany moments of contemplation and silent reverence.
