Portiuncula Indulgence
This precious indulgence, granted by Jesus Christ Himself to our Father Saint Francis, is recognized and confirmed by the Church, and is won in all Franciscan temples, on August 2 (starting on the eve of the 1st).
This is his story...
Francis, hurt by the offenses to God for sins, and the eternal perdition of so many souls who committed them, saw Jesus Christ, alive and glorious, and his divine Mother the Virgin Mary in the small church (porziuncola chiesa) that had lovingly been there. repaired with his own hands, in honor of the Queen of Angels.
In 1216, Francis prostrated himself to pray. Our Lord Jesus said to him: "So many are your tears for the salvation of souls, ask me, Francis, what you want." Francis replied: “I, miserable sinner, I ask, through the intercession of your Holy Mother, that you grant the grace that all those who come to this church confessed achieve forgiveness of all their sins and remain in your presence as they were after receiving the holy baptism. " The Lord replied: “You ask a lot, Francisco, but at the request of my Mother, your intercessor, I grant you that grace. Go to my Vicar on earth to confirm it. "
Porziuncola Chiesa, the small portion, restored by the loving hands of our Father Saint Francis.
Francis humbly presented himself before Pope Honorius III: "Holy Father, I request a very full indulgence for all sinners who, having confessed, come to visit the church that I have repaired."
The Pope said: “It is not customary to grant such a large indulgence to so little. How many years do you want this grace to last? ”
Saint Francis replied: “Holy Father, I do not ask for years but for souls. It is my Lord Jesus Christ who wants it. " Pope Honorius, moved, said three times: "I am pleased, I am pleased, I am pleased to grant this grace."
The day on which this extraordinary joy was to be won was yet to be determined, and the cardinals said that this indulgence granted without the burden of fasting or alms would harm that of Rome, Jerusalem, and Santiago.

Saint Francis continued to pray to God at the Porziuncola, for the desired indulgence. And again he was heard: “At the request of my Mother I granted the Indulgence, that it be won on the day that my apostle Peter, imprisoned by Herod, got rid of the chains. I will move the heart of my Vicar, and I will fulfill your wish ”
Francis went to Rome with four companions who were witnesses to the vision, and obtained the confirmation of the indulgence for August 1, from the eve of that day until the sunset of the following August 2.
Many miracles were worked in favor of the authenticity of this indulgence. The Lord manifested how beautiful they came out of the Franciscan temples, the souls who had come stained, and how many glorious came out of Purgatory for the visits they made.
