Vintage Card of Saint Francis Stigmatta
This type of small prints of saints are considered an important part of popular sacred art. The canvases and other religious images that adorn churches and chapels are intended for a more official and public cult, when vintage cards were meant to be carried on with the faithful. All of these works recreate Christian figures, Marian devotions, or reproduce the figures of saints or angels.
In this old mid-century card, we find Saint Francis falling to the ground in a moment of ecstasy as he receives the impression of the wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ. His wounds are reflected in Francis' hands and feet, while a fifth ray pierces his heart.
The scene took place during one of Saint Francis' intense moments of prayer, while he was finishing a Lent in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel, which culminated in the festival of adoration of the Holy Cross.
The rays of light stand out in the middle of this night scene, and on the horizon, and behind the saint, we can see the rock formations of the monumental Della Verna mount.
