Saint Margaret Cortona by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta

Piazzetta was an Italian Rococo painter of religious subjects and genre scenes. He was born in Venice, the son of a sculptor Giacomo Piazzetta, from whom he had early training in wood carving.

Giovanni Battista Piazzetta's technique included using warm, rich colors, dramatic lighting, and black chalk to create a dark palette. He was a master draftsman who often used charcoal or black chalk on gray paper.

In this work, Saint Margaret contemplates the crucified Lord, in the figure of the crucifix in front of her. This crucifix is mounted on a skull, a sign with which Saint Francis of Assisi is commonly represented, of whom Margaret was a disciple, from the Third Franciscan Order.
