St Francis by Orazio Gentileschi
Orazio Gentileschi, an Italian painter of the Baroque period, is widely recognized for his depictions of Saint Francis. Among his most notable works is "Saint Francis Supported by an Angel," which captures the moment after Saint Francis receives the stigmata.
This work depicts Saint Francis, in a state of deep prayer, embracing himself while having a heavenly vision. Gentileschi's works focus on Saint Francis's emotional experience, showing his ecstatic state and connection with the divine.
The Baroque period was a time of great artistic production in Italy. Saint Francis had been (and continues to be) a popular subject in religious art at the time, and Gentileschi contributed to the saint's iconography with his unique interpretations.
Gentileschi would have been an early follower of Caravaggio, and his style is characterized by the dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) and the realistic depiction of the central figures, in this case, Saint Francis of Assisi.
