Saint Francis vintage illustration

This kind of small prints of saints are considered an important part of popular sacred art. The canvases and other religious images that adorn churches and chapels are intended for a more official and public cult, when vintage cards were meant to be carried on with the faithful. All of these works recreate Christian figures, Marian devotions, or reproduce the figures of saints or angels.

In this vintage mid-century card, we find Saint Francis at the time of receiving our Lord's physical wounds at the time of the Crucifixion. Unlike more traditional representations, here the stigmatta is represented in light brown strokes, instead of the usual red slashes, or droplets of blood.
