Arrival of St Agnes of Assisi Antonio Oliveira 1697

Arrival of Saint Agnes of Assisi at the Convent by Antonio de Oliveira Bernardes. This painting was made in 1697 and is now located inside the Church of Santa Clara in Évora, Portugal. António de Oliveira Bernardes was a Portuguese painter and tile maker of the 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in Alentejo, he served as steward of the Irmandade de São Lucas between 1686 and 1687, and was part of the important cycle of masters who shaped Portuguese tile production. It is thought that he may have died in 1732, although this cannot be confirmed.

In the scene, Saint Agnes of Assisi arrives at the convent accompanied by members of the Franciscan community. She is shown stepping gracefully into the religious enclosure, her figure turned slightly as if still in motion, emphasizing both the solemnity and joy of her entrance into religious life. To one side, a group of nuns welcomes her with open gestures and tender expressions, while a friar stands near the entrance, guiding the moment with calm authority. The architecture of the convent frames the figures, with delicate arches and soft interior light, lending the composition a sense of peace and spiritual purpose. The painter's palette, warm and luminous, enhances the gentle reverence of the scene and highlights Agnes’s humility and dedication.
