Saint Elizabeth taking the Franciscan Vows

Español

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary took the Franciscan vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity on Good Friday in 1228. She joined the Third Order of St. Francis, a lay group of Franciscans. On Good Friday, 1228, in the Franciscan house at Eisenach near the Wartburg Castle, Elizabeth formally renounced the world. Before God she proclaimed her desire to live in poverty, chastity, and obedience. She was a Franciscan Penitent and lived in constant conversion.

St. Elizabeth was a remarkable woman of the Middle Ages who lived the gospel of Christ. She was a woman of deep prayer and unshakeable faith. She faced many sorrows in her life, especially the death of her husband. She lived a life of love for the sick and the homeless and always had a special love of children. Elizabeth built a culture of life in her region by giving to the poor, nursing the sick, and loving as Christ would love. This is something we can all do.
