HOLY MARY OF THE ANGELS AT THE PORTIUNCOLA
That night Christ appeared to Saint Francis praying at the Porziuncola
The origin of the "Feast of Forgiveness" lies in an episode in the life of Saint Francis. One night in 1216, he was immersed in prayer at the Porziuncola. Suddenly, a bright light shone, and Francis saw Christ above the altar, with the Madonna and the Angels to his right. They asked him what he desired for the salvation of souls. His response was immediate: "Most Holy Father, although I am wretched and a sinner, I beg you to grant ample and generous forgiveness." His request was granted, and since that year, after receiving permission from Pope Honorius III, the "Feast of Forgiveness" has been celebrated on August 2nd at Santa Maria degli Angeli, as well as in all Franciscan parishes and churches. An indulgence is granted to those who receive Communion, confess, and pray for the Pope.
From noon on August 1st to midnight the following day, a plenary indulgence can be obtained at the Porziuncola, a single time.
