On March 9, 1984, during the sixth year of the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, the official Ritual of the Secular Franciscan Order (OFS) received formal approval from the Holy See. This ritual book provides the liturgical texts and guidelines used by the Secular Franciscan Order for important moments in the life of the fraternity, including the Rite of Admission, the Rite of Profession, and other celebrations that mark the commitment of lay people who choose to follow Christ according to the spirituality of Francis of Assisi.

The Ritual was developed following the renewal of the Franciscan family encouraged by the Second Vatican Council. After the approval of the renewed Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order by Pope Paul VI in 1978, it became necessary to prepare a ritual that reflected both the ancient Franciscan tradition and the renewed understanding of the vocation of secular Franciscans within the Church. The 1984 Ritual thus serves as an important expression of the spiritual identity and mission of the Order.

The Ritual of the OFS in each nation and cultural context must appropriately manifest the gift of the Holy Spirit and the commitment to evangelical life proper to the Secular Franciscan vocation. On the one hand, this requires the thoughtful incorporation of cultural elements that are meaningful in each region. On the other, it calls for fidelity to the Franciscan vocation and to its catholicity—ensuring unity among all fraternities and maintaining communion with the wider Church.

In this way, the Ritual helps secular Franciscans throughout the world live their vocation with both local expression and universal unity, strengthening the bonds that connect fraternities across cultures while remaining faithful to the spirit of Saint Francis.
