Saint Francis embraces Christ by Domenico Raucci

Saint Francis embraces Christ, by Domenico Raucci (1908)

Domenico Raucci (Italian painter, 1872-1935) worked in France, the United States, and Italy. Throughout his career he specialized mainly on depicting religious subjects. His most famous painting is a deposition of Jesus Christ with Saint Francis, dated in 1908, currently allocated in the episcopate of Isernia (Italy). In his honor and that of his nephew Domenico Raucci junior, the municipality of Isernia has dedicated a permanent exhibition in the rooms adjacent to the civic library.

This beautiful scene represents Saint Francis embracing Christ, as he is on the Cross. Differently from Murillo's original work in the 1600's, in Raucci's piece Saint Francis' expression is overcome with joy.

Another more obvious difference, is that Raucci's representation sits on an opposite angle of the same scene, giving a different point of view, now focusing on Francis' face, and his before mentioned expression) rather than Jesus Christ.
