Saint Francis of Assisi Embracing Christ on the Cross by Francesc Ribalta
Embrace of Saint Francis of Assisi to the Crucified (1620)
This canvas, made around 1620 with a devout feeling superior to the rest of his work, corresponds to the mature period of Francisco Ribalta. Its theme, in accordance with the ownership of the Capuchin convent of the Blood of Christ for which it was painted, shows Saint Francis embracing Jesus, bringing his face close to the bleeding wound on the Redeemer's side to participate in the sufferings of Christ. in his passion. In response to this mystical union, not exempt from a certain morbidity, Christ unnails one arm from the cross to place his crown of thorns on the shaved head of the saint of Assisi, while an angel, with an emotional gesture, prepares to crown the Crucified with a flower headband.
