Saint Francis by Alexandre Riquer 1890
Stunning depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi, as he frequently sat down in the woods, surrounded by sister nature, as he praised all of God's creatures. In this episode of this remarkable saint, Francis preaches to the birds, and they come together to listen to his words.
The author, Alexandre Riquer was a versatile artist intellectual and Catalan designer, illustrator, painter, engraver, writer and poet.
Its effectiveness in capturing the human figure is highlighted in the natural position of the saint, slightly hunched towards the birds with one foot placed in front of the other and extending his hand to touch them.
On the other hand, the realism of the birds, some in mid-flight, landing, and others resting, show his talent for portraying movement.
