St Francis adoring the Child
The first birth was created in Italy. It was St. Francis of Assisi, the initiator of crib scenes, between 1200 and 1226. It is said that while touring the small town of Rieti in 1223, Christmas surprised him at the hermitage of Greccio and that was where it all began. He was inspired to reproduce the birth of Jesus live. It is also believed that the first birth with figures was built in Naples and was made of clay figures. The tradition of the Nativity scenes spread rapidly throughout Italy and then to the whole world and today it appears in the Christmas traditions of hundreds of countries around the world.
