Via crucis a Franciscan tradition

Every Friday of Lent, the Via Crucis is prayed. St. Francis felt great adoration for Christ on the holy cross, which he inherited to his spiritual family, in all of its branches.

Francis' mystical experience of the Passion culminated when he received the stigmas in Della Verna in 1224. He was to compose the Office of the Passion, which is practically a "Franciscan Way of the Cross."

The Via Crucis contains 14 stations, each of which is set in a step or episode of the Passion of the Lord. In today's times, a fifteenth station dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ is sometimes added.
