Crucifixion, by Bernardino Luini (1530)
Bernardino Luini's Crucifixion is a famous Renaissance oil painting that depicts the Crucifixion of Christ. Luini painted it in 1529 in the Santa Maria degli Angeli church in Lugano, Switzerland. The painting is a large fresco that spans an entire wall.
Features of the painting. The painting creates a huge, overwhelming scene with an illusionistic architectural frame. The foreground shows Christ's death, the crosses, and people's reactions, which seem to push right up to the viewer. The background landscape contains smaller, separate scenes.
Besides the blessed Virgin Mary, other saints present are Paul, Mary Magdalene, John and Francis.
Three episodes that happened before the Crucifixion are arranged symmetrically on the left, and three episodes that happened after are arranged on the right. Luini was an Italian artist who was influenced by Leonardo da Vinci and other painters from Milan. His paintings were popular with collectors and critics from the 18th century until the end of the 19th century.
