Crucifixion with the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Francis and Catherine of Siena, attributed to Raffaello Vanni

Raffaello Vanni was an Italian painter of the Baroque born at Siena. He first trained with his father, Francesco Vanni, who died in 1610. He was afterwards sent to Rome, and recommended to the care of Antonio Carracci. He became a follower of the style of Pietro da Cortona.

The iconography on this copper derives from an invention of Francesco Vanni, the artist's father, and includes the figures of Mary and Saints Francis and Catherine of Siena around the crucified Christ.

The scene is set against the backdrop of a dark horizon, illuminated simultaneously by the sun, the moon and flashes of light that accentuate the drama of the event. The stylistic features confirm the attribution to the painter, capable of combining a reformed rigor and composure with a luminosity with Baroque tones.

Raffaello Vanni used oil on canvas or wood panels for his paintings, applying them to both canvas and wood panels.
