Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, by Juan van der Hamen y León (1630)

Juan van der Hamen y León was a Spanish Baroque painter (1596–1631), renowned for his still lifes and flower paintings. The son of Flemish parents and a member of the royal corps of archers, he also produced religious works, such as Saint Francis in Prayer and Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata. These paintings are distinguished by their meticulous detail and high pictorial quality, remarkable achievements given the artist’s brief lifetime.

Born to Flemish parents, Juan van der Hamen y León was a highly respected painter at the Spanish court and a contemporary of Velázquez, despite his short life—he died at the age of 35. He produced two known works depicting Saint Francis: Saint Francis in Prayer and Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata.

The work presented in this publication is Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, an oil on canvas measuring 190 × 109.5 cm, which represents the saint’s mystical moment.

It is directly related to The Apparition of the Virgin and Child to Saint Francis (1628), originally from the Franciscan Convent of San Gil in Madrid and now in the Spanish National Heritage collection, as well as The Apparition of the Immaculate Conception to Saint Francis, dated around 1630, from the Convent of Santa Isabel de los Reyes in Toledo.

The painting’s excellent state of preservation highlights Van der Hamen’s technique and his precise naturalism.
