Crucifix of Saint Damiano
An artist from Umbria painted the Crucifix icon in the 12th century. It is painted in walnut wood, to which the canvas with the image was then glued. It measures 190 centimeters high, 120 centimeters from arm to arm, and 12 centimeters thick.
It is likely that the crucifix was destined to be hung above the altar of the Holy Sacrament, which suggests that the church of Saint Damian was once a parish. In 1257 the poor Poor Clares left the little Church of San Damiano to move to Saint George's, takiing the Crucifix with them.
They carefully kept it for 700 years until, during the Holy Week of 1957, the crucifix was exposed for public veneration, hanging before the altar in the chapel of St. George in the Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi.
