Crucifixion with Saint Francis Antoniazzo Romano
Crucifixion with Saint Francis (1475).Tempera and gilding on panel.
Antoniazzo Romano was an italian artist, one of the leading painters of the Roman school in the fifteenth century. He was active from 1461 to 1508. The Crucifixion with Saint Francis was finished between 1475, and 1480, and during this period of his career, his painting skills were at their height. Roberto Longhi in 1927 called the painting "a beautiful perfection".
The figure of Christ is placed against a sky with fading evening light, and this is central to the composition. On the cross above Christ's head hangs a placard reading " INRI" (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews).
St. Francis kneels to the Christ's right, displaying the stigmata on his hands. A look of ecstasy on his face. The rolling hills of the scene's setting are reminiscent of Assisi, the home of St. Francis. In its simplicity, the landscape background is unusual for Antoniazzo.
