Jesus Christ Saint Francis by Giuseppe Bertini
Basilica di San Babila in Milan, Italy, by Giuseppe Bertini
Giuseppe Bertini was an Italian painter, active in his native Milan. He studied at the Brera under Luigi Sabatelli and Giuseppe Bisi, and in 1845 was awarded the Prix de Rome on the strength of a picture of the meeting between Dante and Fra Ilario. He also painted the Triumphal entry of the allied sovereigns into that city after the battle of Magenta.
In this painting we find Jesus Christ on the Holy Cross, at the time of his death. Unlike most depictions of the crucifixion, this glorious scene, is very bright. Saint Francis, at the foot of the cross, extends his arms towards the lord, in his well known gesture of embrace (it is this precise posture how the saint is traditionally represented). On the back, an uncountable amount of angels cry unconsolably, as they witness the death of Jesus.
He painted frescoes on a vaulted room of the residence of the Puricelli Guerra, representing the great men of the Middle Ages, backgrounded against perspectives of Gothic architecture. He painted the sipario in collaboration with Raffaele Casnedi for the theatre of La Scala in 1862.
