Crucified Christ with Saints Anthony of Padua, Magdalene and Valentine by Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734)

Sebastiano Ricci was an Italian Baroque painter of the late Baroque period in Venetian painting. About the same age as Piazzetta, and an elder contemporary of Tiepolo, he represents a late version of the vigorous and luminous Cortonesque style of grand manner fresco painting. He was the uncle of Marco Ricci (1676 – 1730), who trained with him, and became an innovator in landscape painting.

Though Ricci is primarily known for decorating walls with large canvases or frescoes. In this work, he used an array of cold tones to describe and model these remorseful figures, which are now present at the time of the Crucifixion of Jesus.
