Saint Clare Easter

Español

Saint Clare was born on July 16, 1194, in Assisi, a town in central Italy. She came from a noble family and was very close to Francis, who would later be named a saint by the Church. From an early age, she developed an interest in the faith, dedicated hours to prayer, and helped with household chores and caring for the children.

At the age of 18, she witnessed Saint Francis deliver his Lenten sermon in the Church of San Giorgio. This act inspired her to live according to the Gospel and develop a closer connection with religion. On the night of Palm Sunday in 1212, Clare decided to go to the Christ located in the Monastery of San Damiano and renounce her possessions "out of love for the most holy and beloved Child wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in the manger."

From that day on, she joined the Order of Friars Minor, and Francis cut his hair as a sign of his detachment from all material possessions. She is usually depicted carrying a monstrance—a metal object that holds a host—as a symbol of her devotion to the faith and to the teachings of Christ.

Prayer

St. Clare, Today we join you in celebrating the joy of Christ’s resurrection. May your life continue to serve as a constant reminder for us to turn to Christ for all things. Amen.
