Crucifixion with Saints Francis and Anthony
Crucifixion scene with Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony in the background, by an unknown 17th-century artist.
In this work, Francis approaches the group of saints adoring the Lord at the moment of his death. Saint Anthony of Padua looks up to contemplate him. His face is not visible, however, it is possible to identify him by seeing the upper part of a bouquet of lilies with which he is always depicted.
17th century paintings were characterized by the Baroque style, which emphasized drama, movement, and realism. They often used chiaroscuro, a technique that uses light and shadow to create depth and volume.
In this case the crucifixion scene is traditionally nocturnal, offering the opportunity for contrast between the dark night and the white atmosphere of the saints.
