Vintage Card Saint Francis and birds
French vintage catholic card with the image of Saint Francis of Assisi, manufactured by Maison Bouasse Lebel Lecène & Companie. Made in France mid XXth centuty.
This type of small prints of saints are considered an important part of popular sacred art. The canvases and other religious images that adorn churches and chapels are intended for a more official and public cult, when vintage cards were meant to be carried on with the faithful. All of these works recreate Christian figures, Marian devotions, or reproduce the figures of saints or angels.
In this old mid-century card, we find Saint Francis preaching to the birds, while one of his companions witnesses the miracle.
