Purgatory souls rescued by Saints Francis and Anthony of Padua

Español

The blessed souls of purgatory are souls of the faithful who died in minor sins and need to go through the purifying fire to present themselves before God. These are souls that are loved by Jesus, paying what they owe to divine justice, and they should not be forgotten.

Saint Francis has been previously represented rescuing souls from the purgatory. In the upper part of this work we see Saint Joseph with Santo Domingo de Guzmán, as they both venerate the "ayate" with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which is presented by two cherubs.

The central figure of this painting is Our glorified Lord Jesus Christ, although he is holding the column where he was scourged. It is also possible to see the whip, hanging between his hands.

At the bottom, we find two important Franciscan figures, Saint Anthony of Padua on the right side, and to the left, the founder of the Order, Saint Francis of Assisi. Both saints rescue souls from purgatory, while imploring the intercession of the blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe to carry out such a task.

Among the representation of the souls in purgatory indigenous people can be seen, Spaniards, and even a bishop. All of the, in their nakedness are ashamed of their miseries, and pray for forgiveness.
