Assisi to Perugia



After years of hostilities, Assisi managed to organize a small armed army, which also included chivalry from Spoletto as well. Around his twenties, Francisco went out with his countrymen to fight against the inhabitants of Perugia, in one of many frequent battles, between the two rival cities of that time.

The decisive Battle at Ponte San Giovanni took place in November 1202. Thinking that they were ready to face Perugia, they discovered that their preparation was insufficient for battle, leading to defeat for the soldiers of Assisi, and the imprisonment of many assisians. Among them, was Francis .

They would spend a whole year in captivity in Perugia, before the survivors could return to Assisi. During this time, a fever that affected Francis, making him redirect his thoughts towards the Eternal Being.
