Vergine Immacolata by Enrico Reffo
This artwork, beloved both by Franciscans and the Company of the Daughters of Mary is allocated to the left of the main altar of the Church of St. Thomas, in Turin. The central canvas depicting the Immaculate Virgin with Saint Francis, Saint Anthony, Saint Bonaventure and Saint Bernadine of Sienna, Saint Lucia, and Saint Agnes. It was painted by the famous Italian master Enrico Reffo (1831-1917).
The scene represents this group of saints as they are stunned by the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in her advocation of Immaculate Conception. Saint Francis and Saint Anthony kneel at her feet, while the rest of the saints either pray or contemplate this magnificent apparition.
In ancient times on this altar was placed a painting by Moncalvo, which was replaced in 1835 by another work of Angelo Vacca. The marble of this altar, renovated in 1838, comes from the seventeenth century main altar which was destroyed.
