The cord is part of the way of life of the Franciscans: St. Francis understood the call that God made to him, when he heard the Gospel of St. Matthew, which describes how the Lord told his disciples not to prepare for the road, carrying only what was necessary. Almost immediately, our father St. Francis took off his clothing.

Once he had started dressing a sackcloth, he fastened it to his waist with a simple rope. The knots in the Franciscan cord would come later, when Francis saw the need to symbolize the vows he had made to the Lord. Respectively, the knots symbolize obedience, poverty and chastity. From that moment, and since then, the Franciscan cordon has become a symbol of evangelical poverty, as a result of an unconditional follow-up to Jesus.
