Novena to Saint Francis of Assisi day 4
Prayer before the crucifix of San Damiano
Most High glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart.
Give me right faith, sure hope and perfect charity.
Fill me with understanding and knowledge that I may fulfill your command.
Legend of the Three Companions 58 and Admonition 15
All his eagerness was that even he and the brothers were so enriched with good works, that the Lord be praised for them. And he said to them: «May the peace that you announce by word, have it, and to a greater extent, in your hearts. Let none be provoked by you to anger or scandal, but by your meekness all be induced to peace, to kindness and concord. For this we have been called: to heal the wounded, to bandage the broken and to correct the wrong ones. For many who seem to be members of the devil, will still become disciples of Christ ». Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called children of God (Mt 5,9). Those who, with all that they suffer in this century, for the love of our Lord Jesus Christ, preserve peace in the soul and in the body are truly peaceful.
In our daily lives we strive or at least want to create spaces that foster peaceful relationships. There are few organizations that promote peace inside and outside the Franciscan family. However, peace only finds true hold in the heart of man, from there it can sprout towards others, as we remember that we cannot give what we do not possess. If we have peace within us, it will be much easier and more real to transmit it to others. Saint Francis insists more on possessing peace "May the peace you announce by word, have it, and to a greater extent, in your hearts ..." (Cf.TC 58), thus we affirm that whoever possesses peace as a consequence creates peace. One way to measure how much peace we have is discovered in the admonition or advice given by Francis; in it he shows us that true peacemakers are those who, for the love of our Lord Jesus Christ endure all adversities with a spirit of true peace, so we can say that peace is measured at the time of the test. One of the ways to get to love Jesus Christ and for this love to keep peace is the experience of the gospel. If we try to keep the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. 1R. 1) we will be possessors of the elements that help us to live peace; first in our own life and then in our everyday environment. We will be able to testify as Christians that another world is possible, a world where peace and harmony prevail. Let's start brothers because so far we have done little or nothing.
