Finding the body of Saint Clare of Assisi
Saint Claire died on August 11, 1253 in the monastery of St. Damian, outside of Assisi, and was buried in the church of St. George. Once Claire's Basilica was finished, his body was deposited, on October 3, 1260, in a stone tomb placed deep beneath the main altar, where it remained inaccessible for almost six centuries.
The discovery of the body of Saint Francis in 1818, ignited a desire to also bring to light the body of Saint Clare. In 1850 Pius IX authorized the pertinent excavations, and on September 23 of that same year the sepulcher containing the remains of the Saint was solemnly opened and his relics were exposed to the veneration of the faithful.
On October 3, 1872, they were deposited in an urn inside the new crypt built for this purpose. The current location of the remains of St. Claire is 1987, after the holy relics were subjected to an appropriate conservative treatment.
