Touch of Nature
"A Touch of Nature" by Arthur John Elsley on 1902 (oil on canvas)
Famous for his scenes of figures playing with their pets, he achieved great popularity during his lifetime, with much of his work appearing in calendars, magazines, and books.
His paintings are colorful and with rural themes, which led to their being used in their time to illustrate calendars and cards. A large number of his works were inspired by the sketches made on his frequent bicycle trips through the countryside. Like his friend Frederick Morgan, his painting is characterized by the use of bright colors and an excellent compositional balance.
