St Francis meets St Dominic by Lion 1610

Español

This painting, created by Angelo Lion in 1610, presents the meeting of Saint Dominic and Saint Francis in a serene, pastoral setting. Although the scene depicts Saint Francis as elderly, this is historically inaccurate, as Francis died at the age of 41. Nonetheless, the artist intentionally chooses to portray Francis with the signs of age, emphasizing humility, frailty, and spiritual wisdom gained through a life of devotion.

The encounter takes place outside the walls of a medieval town, near what appears to be a villa or large rural dwelling. Saint Dominic gently receives Saint Francis, steadying him and supporting his step as they clasp hands in a gesture of fraternal charity and mutual respect. The two founders are shown turning slightly toward each other, as if beginning an intimate conversation rooted in shared spiritual mission and understanding.

Around them, farm animals rest quietly, and small wild creatures, including rabbits, appear at peace in the scene. This detail links Francis directly to his well-known love for all living beings, and at the same time reflects the harmony and gentleness that both saints sought to cultivate through their preaching and their communities. The work is currently housed in the Basilica of Saints John and Paul in Venice, Italy, and is executed in oil on canvas.
