Vision of St Francis by Vicente Carducho 1631
Vision of Saint Francis of Assisi by the Italian master Vicente Carducho (1631), painted in oil on canvas. In this scene, Saint Francis receives a vision from the Virgin Mary.
This painting and its parallel, Saint Anthony of Padua and the Christ Child (Saint Petersburg), were often the centerpieces of the side altars of the Church of San Gil, Madrid. Both are signed and dated in the same year. In the transition from Classicism to Naturalism, Vicente Carducho (Carducci) was one of the second-generation Italian masters, descendants of the artists summoned by Philip II to work at the Escorial, a favorite of the court until the arrival of Velázquez.
The painting contains several liturgical references, mainly in the tree foliage (the attributes of Mary) and in the landscape elements (thorn, lilies, cedar, etc.). The clear composition is Italian; the vision is Spanish.
The work is a prime example of the Baroque style, characterized by its dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as its rich textures.
